What time does the gold market open and close?

Gold (XAUUSD) trades nearly 24 hours a day, from Sunday 5:00pm to Friday 5:00pm New York time, pausing one hour each day around 5:00pm NY. The window that actually matters is the London–New York overlap: 13:00–17:00 UTC (8:00am–12:00pm New York), when volume peaks and spreads are tightest.

The full schedule

Gold is an over-the-counter market, so it follows the forex week rather than an exchange bell. It opens Sunday around 5:00pm New York (22:00 UTC) and runs continuously until Friday 5:00pm New York, with a short daily maintenance break at the 5:00pm rollover. Your broker's server time may differ from your local time — always check which one your platform displays.

The three sessions, in UTC and New York time

Asia runs roughly 23:00–08:00 UTC (7:00pm–4:00am NY) and is typically the quietest, often building the day's initial range. London runs 08:00–17:00 UTC (3:00am–12:00pm NY) and brings the first real volume, frequently sweeping the range Asia built. New York runs 13:00–22:00 UTC (8:00am–5:00pm NY). The four hours where London and New York overlap — 13:00–17:00 UTC — are the highest-volume, most directional of the day.

Why that overlap specifically

It isn't arbitrary. London is the centre of the global over-the-counter spot gold market, while New York houses COMEX, the dominant gold futures exchange. During the overlap, institutional order flow from both the spot and futures sides is active simultaneously. That convergence is what produces the volume — and it's also why spreads on XAUUSD are at their tightest in this window, which directly lowers the cost of every round trip.

The best days of the week

Session timing isn't the only pattern. Tuesday through Thursday generally offer the most consistent conditions, with Wednesday often the strongest as weekly liquidity peaks. Monday tends to build slowly after the weekend gap and can be erratic. Friday can offer a decent New York open, but liquidity falls away sharply through the afternoon as desks square up for the weekend — thin conditions where breakouts fail most often.

When you should actually trade

Most retail damage happens in the thin hours. Late New York and mid-Asia often chop sideways on low volume, which punishes breakout entries and grinds accounts down through spread. In our own testing, restricting entries to the London–New York overlap improved profit factor while cutting trade frequency — fewer, better trades.

A practical routine

Mark the Asian session high and low before London opens. Watch whether the London open sweeps one of those extremes and rejects — that sweep is often the day's tell. Then trade the reaction into the New York overlap, and stand down when volume leaves.
